This is one of them. This is an "out take" because all he wanted to do was play, but I turned it into something cute for his mom. I thought it expressed his personality perfectly.

After reading many dozens of professional camera reviews online, countless personal reviews, and weighing my own needs, I'd narrowed the DSLR search down to 3 cameras; the Nikon D90, Nikon D5000, and although not technically a DSLR, the Panasonic G1. In every decision there is compromise and I won't go into a lot of boring details but after hands on use of each one, I ended up with a D5000 with the 2 DX, VR, kit zoom lenses, 18-55 and 55-200, giving me an effective range of 28-300mm or so in 35mm terms.
It's not exactly a pretty camera, I don't care about the video, and the Live View is of limited use, but it feels good in my hands, is not too heavy, and the menu system seems to flow easily. Not having a dedicated ISO knob or button I set the function button for it, so now I've got quick easy access to most of what I need. For now at least, it was the right combination of weight, size, cost, performance and features. Here are several of the first shots, taken Saturday morning after the big winter storm that moved north. A few more are in my scrapbook: http://pics.livejournal.com/nowfated/ga llery/00001qy0?page=3
